Who has not heard the phrase “An apple a day keeps the Doctor away”?
Apples as symbols have been used through the centuries. In Christian belief the apple was seen as the forbidden fruit and by Adam and Eve eating this delicious fruit they were banished from the Garden of Eden. In Norse mythology the Goddess of youth would provide the other gods with apples to give them eternal youthfulness. Aphrodite, from Greek mythology, was awarded a golden apple by Paris of Troy. The symbol of the apple was seen in Greek mythology as a sign of love. I you threw an apple to someone that would mean you loved that person and if that person accepted the apple they in turn accepted your love. Mostly apples were seen as symbols of love, youth and happiness.
Today, apples are widely available through all 4 seasons of the year. There are over 7000 different types of apples in shades of green, yellow, pink and red. There are numerous benefits of eating apples regularly. Listed below you will see a short list of benefits:
- When biting and chewing an apple it stimulates the production of saliva in your mouth reducing tooth decay and lowering levels of bacteria. This results in whiter and healthier teeth.
- Apple juice may help fight the effects of aging and Alzheimer’s dementia. Apple juice has been proven to increase levels of neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain. This enhances memory and general well being.
- People who eat fruits and high-fiber foods may gain protection against Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s is caused by destruction of dopamine-producing nerve cells. Antioxidants help fight this destruction in cells.
- By eating an apple a day you can decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Apples fights blood sugar swings due to its high soluble fiber content. This type of fiber can also lower cholesterol, strengthen your heart, prevent gallstones, improve bowel movements, fight symptoms of IBS, control your weight, detox liver and boost your immune system.
Apples are a must have in any diet but always remember to have a balanced diet. By eating only apples you will not get most of these benefits. You also need protein, carbs and other sources of fiber. There is no set diet one can follow. You need to figure out what works for your body and what doesn’t. This you can achieve by order of elimination. Some people may eat loads of fiber and others are intolerant or may only have small amounts. Listen to your body and figure out what works and what doesn’t.
Other ways in increasing your overall health is by keeping active in your everyday life and go for your yearly checkups. One can also go for ozone therapy. Ozone therapy puts oxygen back into the body. Due to air pollution etc we do not get enough oxygen into our bodies. Oxygen improves organ functions and cleans the body of impurities and bacteria.
