Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like colds, flu as well as allergies is of utmost importance. Experts have confirmed that if someone gets the flu and COVID-19 at the same time, the mortality rate drastically increases. But how do you know the difference between influenza & COVID-19?
What is Influenza (Flu)?
There are multiple strains of influenza and it changes every year. Luckily, so does the flu vaccines. So, what exactly is the flu? It’s a common viral infection that effects the lungs, nose and throat. Most flu symptoms can be managed by over the counter medicine and bed rest. The flu can however be fatal to individuals with a weakened immune system as well as people suffering from chronic diseases, small children, the elderly and pregnant women.
How do you get the Flu?
The majority of people contract the flu from friends, family or coworkers. Small children in daycare are also very prone to get it as they touch surfaces, their face and mouth way more than adults. Saying that adults touch their face about 16 times per hour, although I think & hope that number has reduced this year.
You can contract the flu by:
- Touching contaminated surfaces, eg door knobs, staircase railings, etc
- Airborne respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes
- Saliva through kissing and sharing food & drinks
- Skin-to-skin contact through handshakes or hugs
What is COVID-19?
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine; “Coronaviruses are a type of virus. There are many different kinds, and some cause disease. A newly identified coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has caused a worldwide pandemic of respiratory illness, called COVID-19”.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
COVID-19 symptoms are very similar to that of the Flu. Most people who fall sick with COVID-19 will experience mild to moderate symptoms and will recover. Again, those that are worst effected by COVID are the elderly, those with chronic diseases or with an impaired or low immune system. Below are a few of the symptoms.
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Congested and / or runny nose
- Fever or chills
- Shortness of breath
- Body aches
- Headaches
- Sudden loss of taste or smell
- Sudden fatigue
- Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
How do I know if it’s Flu, Allergies or COVID-19?
The short answer is, you don’t. The symptoms are so similar that without a test to confirm it, you wont know. That is why it is so important for all of us to self isolate should we feel any of the above symptoms. That way, should we have either flu or COVID, we won’t give it to anybody else.
This pandemic expects us not to look after ourselves but also our neighbors. If we all do our part, we’ll get through this together.
When should I see a Doctor?
We are all aware of the massive stress the world’s medical sector is under. We have to try our best to only seek medical attention when it is absolutely necessary.
That being said, if you start feeling worse or have difficulty breathing it is best to contact your healthcare provider immediately. They will be able to assess the situation over the phone or assist you in visiting your local GP or medical centre.
It is however very important to NOT go to your Doctor, without calling first. There are special precautions they have to take with individuals suffering from flu-like symptoms. Remember, just because of COVID doesn’t mean all other diseases are sitting on the bench until this is over. People are still getting cancer, HIV & other chronic diseases.
What can I do to fight Flu, allergies & COVID-19?
Medical experts have suggested that everyone should get their local flu vaccine. As mentioned before, if you get flu & COVID-19 at the same time your chances of recovery reduces drastically. It is important to eat healthy, drink supplements & exercise. Ozone therapy is also a great way to help boost your immune system and fight viruses and bacteria.
Why ozone therapy?
Ozone therapy is a non-invasive therapy that can be done at a spa or clinic in your area as well as in the comfort of your own home in an ozone sauna. Our fibreglass sauna models are durable and is made in South Africa. We ship nationally as well as world wide.
For those on a tight budget, we also have portable tent saunas and insufflation kits (specifically for ear, rectal or vaginal insufflation).

Benefits of ozone therapy
There are over 100 benefits for ozone therapy. Regarding the respiratory system ozone can assist in the stimulation of white cell production and increase oxygen levels in the blood which helps fight infection as well as a lowered immune system.
Ozone therapy also kills anaerobic micro-organisms that cause asthma and kills viruses and bacteria. It can also help relieve fever, congestion, fatigue, depression and neutralizes toxins and poisons in the body. Regular ozone therapy can help clean out your lungs and boost your immune system and overall health.
