[Kids Recipe] Banana bread

Kids have been underestimated for their skills for years. When the first Junior Master Chef came out I thought “Oh, this is going to be a disaster!”. Shockingly this was very far from the truth. These kids could cook!! We underestimate the abilities of children and should give them some more credit and room to experiment.

This delicious Banana Bread recipe yields about 16 slices. For the less experienced cooks, ask an adult to assist you with the oven.

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1¾ cups Flour, sifted
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • ¼ tsp Baking soda
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1/3 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup Sugar
  • 1 cup Bananas (about 3 bananas), mashed with a fork

What you are going to need:

  • Oven (you’ll need help from your adult assistant)
  • Measuring spoons & cups
  • Mixer
  • Sifter
  • Spatula
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Medium-size mixing bowl
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Bread pan
  • Cooking spray

Method:

  1. Oven – Preheat to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Small bowl – whisk the eggs.
  3. Medium bowl – Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  4. Large bowl – Add vegetable oil. Then add the sugar in small amounts while whisking. The mixture will become light and fluffy.
  5. Add the egg mixture to your large bowl of vegetable oil and whisk well.
  6. Then add a small amount of the flour to the large bowl and mix.
  7. Then add a small amount of the mashed bananas and mix.
  8. Repeat with the flour then the banana, then the flour again and the banana again. Repeat until both are fully combined in the large bowl.
  9. Spray your baking pan with cooking spray.
  10. Pour the mixture into the pan and bake for about 70 minutes.
  11. When baked through and golden brown, remove the pan from the oven. Wait about 5 minutes, then remove the bred from the pan and place on cooling rack. Until cooled.
  12. When ready, slice your banana bread into equal slices and serve with butter.

Notes:

Make sure to preheat the oven before mixing your ingredients.

Before removing the pan from the oven first check if its baked through. Do this by gently piercing the bread in the middle, about 5 cm deep, with a knife. If the knife comes out clean, your bread is done. If it comes out doughy, your bread will have to stay in a bit longer.
