The Ebola Virus

The Ebola Virus first appeared in 1976. The first two outbreaks occurred in Nzara, Sudan and Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ebola can be fatal to humans, there is no known treatment and vaccinations are currently being tested. This virus was first transferred to humans by sick animals or carcusses of bats, chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, antelope or porcupines. Thereafter the virus spreads through human-to-human contact through bodily fluids, mucous, blood, surfaces and materials like bedding.

It can take anything between 2-21 days before you have any sign of infection. According to the World Health Organisation, these are the main sign and symptoms of Ebola:

First stage:

  • Sudden fever
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Sore throat

Second stage:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Rash
  • Symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function
  • Internal or external bleeding or in severe cases both (e.g. oozing from the gums, blood in the stools)
  • Low white blood cell and platelet counts
  • Elevated liver enzymes
