Eczema is a medical condition that causes the skin to become itchy, inflamed, dry, red and cracked. The most common form of eczema is atopic eczema. It mainly effects children, but adults can also develop it.

Atopic eczema effects each individual differently. The most common areas where you can develop atopic eczema are:

  • On the back/ front of the knees
  • On the inside/ outside of the elbows
  • On the hands
  • On the cheeks
  • On the scalp
  • Around the neck

Other types of eczema include:

  • Discoid eczema – circular or oval patches on the skin.
  • Contact dermatitis – only occurs when the body comes in contact with a particular substance.
  • Varicose eczema – only occurs in the lower legs and is usually due to blood flow problems.
  • Seborrhoeic eczema – red, scaly patches that develop on the side of the nose, eyebrows, ears and scalp.
  • Dyshidrotic eczema – causes blisters on the palms of the hands

The exact cause of atopic eczema is unknown, but the most common reason for developing atopic eczema is due to an allergic reaction. Individuals with eczema will experience times where symptoms are almost gone and then flare up again for no apparant reason. Best advice is to regulate when your flare ups happen. What did you eat that day? What time of the day/ week/ month/ year it was? What did you do different? Setting up a process of elimination is the best way to figure out what your triggers are.

Currently, there is no cure for atopic eczema, however there are over-the-counter options available to ease the discomfort. The best thing to do it to consult with your GP or a Dermatologist as soon as possible. With their guidance and knowledge you can fight the symptoms a lot better and even get to a point where they reduce.
