Flu and Allergies in 2020

I think its safe to say we’re all done with 2020. Unfortunately 2020 is not done with us, not yet that is. So far, the timeline for a publicly available vaccine is maybe only this time next year. Until then, we have to do all we can to stay safe and healthy. But what if you get normal flu or suffer from allergies?

The upside of allergies

For the first time in decades coughing or sneezing in public is no longer met with a “bless you”, but with multiple stink eyes and people moving away from you. I suffer from perennial allergies (when you have allergies all year round), 2020 hasn’t been very kind to me. Well that is only partly true. With one tiny sneeze I have been able to clear a line at my local supermarket in a flash. So it all depends on how you look at it, I guess.

The downside of allergies

The thing that gets me down the most is never knowing what is my allergies and what may be something else. That is why I’ve practiced social distancing since before the hard lockdown in March with strangers as well as my loved ones. This has continued ever since then. The most important thing, after social distancing, is to make sure you are eating a healthy diet and to drink vitamins to help boost your immune system as well as alternative treatments like daily ozone therapy to help fight any viruses and bacteria that might latch on. Getting enough fresh air and exercising can also be beneficial.

Stop allergens from getting into your home

Another important thing when you suffer from allergies is to eliminate your triggers. I live in a nature reserve so eliminating grass, pollen and seeds are basically impossible. But there are things you can do to help, like keeping the doors and windows closed during the day and only airing out your home for a short while in the morning & evening. Cleaning your home and bedding frequently. Something new I’ve learnt, is to wash your hair at night. Pollen etc can stick to the natural oil on your hair when you go outside. When you go to sleep at night without washing your hair the irritants on your hair gets transferred to your cushion. Ever since washing my hair at night I have rarely woken with a stuffy nose or blurry vision.

Flu in 2020

When following the above guidelines you can prevent your allergies from getting to a point of getting terribly sick. Unfortunately that can not be said about the common cold. Like COVID, the common cold can be spread from human to human as well as by touching contaminated surfaces. People with small children are also more likely to get the flu, but that should decrease this year as most schools & daycare centers are practicing good social distancing and frequent sanitizing.

I read a shocking article from The Guardian the other day, where government scientists have found that; “Having flu and Covid-19 together significantly increases your risk of death”. That does make sense in a way. It’s almost like having flu twice at the same time. For your body to fight that level of infection can be a very hard thing to do, especially as flu also effects your breathing and lungs. Scientist are urging everyone to get their flu vaccines this year.

Getting the flu vaccine

It is said that only 1-2% of people who get the flu vaccine, will have a bad reaction. Those you’ve gotten the flu after receiving the flu vaccine is only because they already had the flu virus when the went to get the vaccine. Ask your doctor about the possible side effects if you have never had this vaccine before. Getting the flu vaccine is a small ask when you look at the suffering COVID-19 can and has caused.

Prevention is better than cure

I might sound like a broken record by now, but as mentioned before, living a healthy lifestyle is super important to your overall well being, as well as getting through this pandemic. Eating healthy food, exercising and drinking enough vitamins and minerals can give your body that extra boost it needs.

Ozone therapy can help fight allergies as well as the flu. It can help boost your immune system and helps improve vitamin and mineral absorption. Ozone helps break down bacteria & viruses and increase the oxygen in your body which helps to reduce inflammation, aches & pains as well as improve sleep and reduce stress & anxiety.
